The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) and the ARUA Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) are pleased to convene a high-level global dialogue to mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) 2026, under the theme “From Evidence to Action: The Role of Research in Tackling Food Loss and Waste.”
Food loss and waste (FLW) is more than a food security challenge. It is a multidimensional food-systems problem with implications for food and nutrition security, climate and environmental sustainability, livelihoods and inequality, technology and innovation, and policy, markets and investment. The webinar will bring these diverse perspectives into one conversation to explore how multidisciplinary research, evidence and partnerships can unlock more integrated and scalable solutions to FLW.
A special feature of the webinar will be a global framing presentation by Prof. Lindiwe Sibanda, a globally renowned food-systems expert and champion for food loss and waste reduction. This will be followed by a high-level multidisciplinary panel examining FLW through five complementary lenses, followed by thematic breakout discussions where participants will build on the panel insights to identify critical evidence gaps, promising solutions and priority areas for action.
The webinar will bring together researchers, policymakers, development partners, private-sector actors, innovators, Early Career Researchers and other food-systems stakeholders from Africa and beyond.
At the heart of the dialogue will be one central question: What can research and researchers contribute to accelerating solutions to food loss and waste? The discussions will culminate in priority messages towards an IDAFLW 2026 Research Call to Action, positioning research and evidence at the centre of efforts to move from awareness to action.
