Criteria for Membership

Membership of ARUA is by invitation from the Executive Committee/Board of Directors only, applying the eligibility criteria listed below. Current member universities may propose to the Executive Committee/Board through the Secretary-General new members to be considered.

The Board will invite institutions to membership after meeting the following eligibility criteria:

1. Demonstrable improvements in the research environment at the university

  1. Does the University’s strategic plan highlight adequately the significance of research and graduate training?
  2. Does the strategic plan provide a clear and acceptable strategy for generating more high-quality research and graduate training?
  3. Has there been a steady and acceptable growth of the research budget as a share of total university budget over the preceding five years?
  4. Have there been steady improvements in research output over the preceding five years?
  5. Is the throughput of graduates improving over time?

2. Demonstrable improvements in the research environment nationally

  1. Is the government interested in and supportive of the university focusing on research and graduate training?
  2. Does the government financial support to the university provide directly for research and graduate training?
  3. Does the university have enough autonomy to pursue any research?

3. Demonstrable interest in inter-university partnerships

  1. Does the university have a good history of international partnerships involving the exchange of students and faculty?
  2. Does the university have adequate administrative structures to support international collaboration in research and graduate training?
  3. Are the university’s rules and regulations supportive of international collaboration in research and graduate training?

The answers to the above questions are answered relying on data available to the ARUA Secretariat from credible sources. The Executive Committee/ Board also takes note of other factors including regional and country balance.

Institutions that are assessed not to be research-intensive yet, but have a strong potential for becoming such, may be considered for associate membership for three years only.
