The ADA’s bi-annual, two-week long Doctoral Schools take place every year in Summer (January) and Winter (June-July) and aim to offer high impact research and methodology training for prospective and current PhD candidates, their supervisors and researchers from a variety of fields. The African Doctoral Academy (ADA) Winter School takes place this year from 2 – 13 July 2018.

Programme

As always the focus is firmly on high impact research and methodology training, as well as options in academic preparedness and career development. This Winter the ADA will offer 17 courses over two weeks, including introductory courses to Research Design and Methodology (Quantitative and Qualitative), Mixed Methods Research Design as well as courses in analytical techniques and software applications (such as SPSS, R and ATLAS.ti), Preparing for a PhD, Writing and Publishing articles and training in Doctoral Supervision.

How to Apply

To apply for the Winter School, follow this link to go to the online form. We use this form as an opportunity to vet your application and make sure we send you an outline of the cost implications of your application. Once we have confirmed your course selection, we will provide you with the Short Course links to register per course.

Costs

The Early Bird rate (valid until 4 May 2018) for the Winter School week-long courses is R7000 per week and the Standard Rate is R8000 (last day for payments is 21 May 2018), excluding the textbooks. The preparatory session is rated at R4500 and the one-day workshops at R1200. As the course numbers for Writing and publishing are small, and have two mentors, the costs are R7500/R8500.

The fee per week includes the workshop tuition and class materials, Wi-Fi internet, refreshments (no lunch), conference pack, free access to the extra-curricular courses and the social evening (braai). Not included is accommodation or your transport to Stellenbosch – although we do offer a complimentary shuttle service to and from Cape Town International Airport. Accommodation is not included, but we offer some options to secure a room for the School at Stellenbosch Accommodation.

Scholarships will be made available in early April for Doctoral Candidates at the start of their PhD journey. More info.
