Addis Ababa University Research Stature is Growing Rapidly
Addis Ababa University is experiencing very significant improvements in its research and publications profile.
The University is experiencing rapid growth in the number of research projects undertaken in a year and the number of publications coming out of these. The growth in publications is observed in both international highly rated (high impact) journals as well as in local journals. A lot of effort is going into enhancing the quality of local journals. These observations were made by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tassew Woldehanna, when he welcomed the Secretary-General of ARUA, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, to his office in Addis Ababa yesterday, 5th September 2022. The Vice Chancellor further observed that the most rapid growth has occurred since his University joined ARUA, and it has been consistent over the period.
Professor Aryeetey, who has been on a tour of East African ARUA universities over the last week, said he was delighted by the recent great performance of Addis Ababa University as reflected in the latest rankings published by Times Higher Education. He said that high ranking was corroborated by other independent data sources available to the ARUA Secretariat.
During his visit to Addis Ababa University, the Secretary-General had extensive discussions with the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Dr Mitike Molla about various ARUA initiatives. He also addressed a meeting of Deans of Colleges and other members of the Senior Management. The Secretary-General had meetings with the leadership of the two ARUA Centres of Excellence hosted by Addis Ababa University, namely Professor Assefa Fiseha (CoE for Good Governance) and Professor Fana Gebresenbet (CoE for Post-Conflict Societies). Discussions were also held with the Directors of two other Centres of Excellence, Professor Abebaw Fekadu (CDT-Africa) and Professor Gete Zeleke (Water and Land Resource Centre), following presentations made about their Centres.
During the Secretary-General’s visit to Addis Ababa University, the Vice Chancellor hosted him to an official lunch at the Addis Sheraton Hotel attended by members of the Senior Management of the University and invited Deans and Directors.
