ARUA VICE-CHANCELLORS MEET AT UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS
Vice-Chancellors of ARUA Member Universities are at the University of Lagos for a two-day meeting of the ARUA Board.
The Chairman of the Board, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, who opened the meeting, welcomed all the Vice-Chancellors for their continued support and interest in the affairs of ARUA. He acknowledged the support from the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola, for the warm hospitality and the hard work put into the preparations for both the Board Meeting and the Fourth Biennial International Conference scheduled for November 15-17, 2023.
The Secretary-General of ARUA, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey acknowledged the contributions from member universities. He presented the state of affairs of ARUA to members.
On day 2 of the ARUA Board Meeting, a team from University of London Federation Members had a joint meeting with the ARUA Board.
Professor Wendy Thomson CBE, Vice-Chancellor, University of London gave a presentation on Building collaboration between ARUA and the University of London: Principles and Expectations.
Among the drivers of engagement she said would be to increase Africa’s contribution to global cutting-edge research output to 5 percent from 1 percent over a period of 10 years as well as to develop strong links between research universities and industry and other productive sectors.
Other members of the team from University of London Federation Members were Prof. Adam Habib, Director, SOAS, University of London, Prof. Julie Sanders, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Royal Holloway University, University of London and Prof. Funmi Olonisakin, Vice-President, King’s College, London.
Vice-Chancellors of ARUA Member Universities in separate remarks embraced the initiative, adding that this would result in mutual benefits to the Federation and ARUA Member Universities.
During the morning session, representatives from The Guild were introduced to the ARUA Board. Prof. Jan Palmowski, Guild Lead on Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence gave a brief on the work of the Clusters of Excellence.
