Professor Ernest Aryeetey receives Honorary Degree from University of Ghana

Professor Ernest Aryeetey, ARUA Secretary-General, has received an honorary degree from the University of Ghana.

Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, a former Vice-Chancellor and alumnus of the University, received the degree Doctor of Laws honoris causa at a colourful ceremony held at the Great Hall of the University.  

The Citation noted that during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor (2010-2016), Prof. Aryeetey initiated changes in the University’s governance structure, moving from a centralized to a decentralized system which resulted in improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of the administrative systems, thus providing room for schools and colleges to be more innovative to enhance teaching, learning and research.  Professor Aryeetey, widely acclaimed as an academic and administrator of international repute, was noted to have led the University to develop a new strategic plan which sought to transform the University into a world-class research-intensive university. The Citation noted among others, that he held academic and consulting appointments at various institutions in Africa, Europe and the Americas, and is very highly regarded for his work on development and political economy, informal finance and microfinance in Africa. In an impressive citation read in his honour, Prof. Aryeetey was extolled for exemplary leadership and for overseeing the University’s transformation into a research-intensive university. 

This year’s awards ceremony was especially significant as it marked University of Ghana’s 75th Anniversary. The University of Ghana, the premier university in Ghana, was founded as the University College of the Gold Coast by Ordinance on August 11, 1948, for the purpose of providing and promoting university education, learning and research.

We congratulate Prof. Ernest Aryeetey on this sterling accomplishment which is another feather in his cap.
