Carnegie Benchmarking Project

The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) is pleased to publish the full narrative report of its Universities Profiles, launched in July 2024. This comprehensive report presents a detailed analysis of institutional trends across the ARUA network, with a strong focus on postgraduate training, academic staffing, research performance, and innovation output.

This brief report is the result of another round of a data-gathering and benchmarking initiative at ARUA universities and funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. It presents a quick summary of the findings of both the first and second rounds of data gathering over seven years, 2015-2021.

ARUA on November 3, 2022, launched the second ARUA Performance Report under Phase II of the ARUA-Carnegie Data Gathering and Benchmarking Project. The University of Cape Town hosted the launch event.

Over 40 representatives from member universities of ARUA have participated in a 3-Day Capacity Building Workshop for Institutional Planning & Research Managers in Accra, as part of Phase 2 of a Carnegie Corporation of New York sponsored Benchmarking & Data-gathering project.

This document presents findings on the analysis of Phase One of the data benchmarking study of ARUA universities, shedding light on their research profiles for the period 2015-2017. The study was funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the report was written by Professor Gerald Wangende-Ouma of University of Pretoria.

ARUA is delighted to share the results of the first phase of the Benchmarking Project with support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY).

The last three days of February 2018 saw a fascinating meeting unfolding at the Elilly Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The hotel was the venue of a meeting of representatives of 13 of the 16 ARUA universities.
