Lund University awards Honorary Doctorate Degree to ARUA Secretary-General

Lund University, Sweden, invited the ARUA-Secretary-General Professor Ernest Aryeetey to receive an Honorary Doctorate degree in May 2020. The award ceremony was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The University has recently decided to merge the 2020 and 2021 award ceremonies, which will take place virtually at 10 am (GMT) on Friday, 28th May 2021. The ceremony will be live streamed from the website of Lund University on www.lu.se/doktorspromotion.

Prof. Ernest Aryeetey has been appointed as the new African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) Board Chair with effect from 1 April 2021. He takes over from Dr. Louis Kasekende whose term ends 31 March 2021, having served in this capacity since April 2017.

ARUA Welcomes University Of Mauritius

The University of Mauritius has become the first associate member university of ARUA following the signing of an MoU between ARUA and the University on 8th March, 2021. The move makes it possible for researchers at the University of Mauritius to participate in all ARUA activities including conferences, workshops, training programs and research projects.

SOAS University of London in partnership with the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) is hosting leading figures from the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) for a discussion on vaccination inequality in an interconnected world. ARUA Annual Report 2020

The year began with a lot of promise for ARUA. There was rapidly growing interest around the world in what ARUA was doing to enhance the performance of African research universities, both in the region and globally. The network was set to build on various initiatives from the previous year, which had led to significant agreements and collaborations with leading global research and funding organisations. It was this growing worldwide interest in ARUA that led us to begin working closely with the Guild of European Research Universities, and to collaborate in the mobilisation of resources to support research and innovation in partnership with the European Union and the African Union.

Prof. Sizwe Mabizela

Chair

Prof. Sizwe Mabizela the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University following his appointment in 2014. He was the first black African vice-chancellor at Rhodes University in over 100 years. He is a professor of Mathematics.

Prof. Mabizela served as Vice Chair of ARUA from January 2021 – December 2023. He became the fourth elected Board Chairman of ARUA in January 2024
