ARUA Signs Memorandum of Understanding with University of Glasgow
University of Glasgow and the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Friday, 28th February 2020 at the Turnbull Room, University of Glasgow. The purpose of the “MoU is to develop research co-operation and to promote mutual understanding between the two parties”.
The Secretary-General of ARUA, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, signed the MoU on behalf of the network, and this was witnessed by Professor Adam Habib, Vice Chancellor of University of the Witwatersrand and Vice Chair of the Board of ARUA. Professor Anton Muscatelli, Vice Chancellor of University of Glasgow signed for his University, with Professor Paul Garside, Dean of Global Engagement (Middle East and Africa) at University of Glasgow as witness.
The signing of the MoU formed part of activities at the just-ended “Capacity Strengthening Symposium” at University of Glasgow. Professor Adam Habib and Professor Ernest Aryeetey were keynote speakers at the Symposium. Professor Habib spoke on “The Importance and Challenges of Capacity Strengthening in Africa” and Professor Aryeetey did a presentation on “The Role of ARUA in Capacity Strengthening in Africa”.
The symposium was attended by over 80 participants drawn from Scottish universities and institutions and was opened by the Vice Chancellor of University of Glasgow. It was organized to give Scottish universities an opportunity to engage in discussions with ARUA. Also present was Professor Jan Palmowski, Secretary-General of the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, who spoke about the new partnership between The Guild and ARUA. University of Glasgow is a member of The Guild.
