UKZN to Review Strategy for International Graduate Training
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is considering measures to strengthen its approach to international graduate training. The move will be designed to enhance the international student experience, among other considerations. This came out during a meeting between some members of the senior management of UKZN and the Secretary-General of ARUA, Professor Ernest Aryeetey on Monday, 1st August 2022.
The ARUA Secretary-General visited the Westville Campus of UKZN as part of his tour of South African ARUA universities. He was welcomed to the campus by Professor Nhlanhla Mkhize, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Humanities) on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Nana Poku. Present at the welcome meeting was Professor Mosa Moshabela, (Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research). The meeting had extensive discussion about ARUA plans and how they affected UKZN. The UKZN officials expressed total commitment to the vision and strategy of ARUA.
The Secretary-General also met with a number of Deans of Research, including Professor Urmilla Bob, Professor Colette Muller and Professor Neil Koorbanally. They were also joined by holders of Research Chairs, including Professor Inge Petersen (Centre for Rural Health), Professor Sunil Maharaj (Astrophysics Research Centre), Professor Fanie Van Heerden (School of Chemistry and Physics), Professor Salim Abdool Karim (CAPRISA) and Dr. Lenhle Dlamini. The final meeting of the day was held with the UKZN data team made up of Ms. Naveena Moodley (Institutional Planning) and Mr. Job Muzumbukilwa (Research Office Manager).
In all the meetings, the need to decentralize the operations of ARUA by redirecting some of the focus to Deans and Directors, was echoed. The Secretary-General assured them of plans to work on that as soon as possible.
