University of Mauritius is making Giant Strides in Research
University of Mauritius is making considerable effort to become a highly respected research-intensive university in the very near future. The effort is shown in the significant investment it is making in its research units in terms of equipment and capacity building.
It expects to invest even more in research and innovation in the coming years and also collaborate with other African universities in this quest. In relation to this, the senior management of the University have indicated that they would like to move from their current Associate Member status at ARUA to becoming full member in the shortest possible time.
The current developments at University of Mauritius were expressed to the Secretary-General of ARUA, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, during a meeting with the senior management of the University on Thursday, 8th December 2022. The meeting which was attended by Pro-Vice Chancellors, Deans and Directors was addressed by the Secretary-General on various developments at ARUA and discussed ways of improving collaboration between University of Mauritius and other ARUA universities. It was chaired by Associate Professor Mohammad Issack Santally, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Planning and Resources). The views expressed by the Senior Management were endorsed by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Sanjeev K. Sobhee when he met with Professor Aryeetey later.
As part of the visit to the University, the Secretary-General met with the data team working on the data-gathering and benchmarking project. They agreed on how the project could be improved for the future. This meeting was facilitated by Mrs. Ranjani Poonoosamy of the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic and Research).
The ARUA Secretary-General visited three different research units, namely the Computational Chemistry Lab under Professor Ponnadurai Ramasami, the Centre Biomedical and Biomaterials Research (CBBR) under Dr. Nowsheen Goonoo and Assoc. Professor Vidushi Neergheen, and the Robotics Lab of the Faculty of Information, Computer and Digital Technology where he met with Dr. Avinash Mungur. The three visits revealed the very significant work being done by Mauritian researchers and the state-of-the-art equipment available to researchers. In the discussions, the parties agreed to explore ways in which researchers from University of Mauritius could work closely with other African researchers.
