Vice-Chancellor of University of Ghana calls on ARUA SG
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has visited the offices of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA). She was received by the ARUA Secretary-General, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey.
The purpose of her visit was not only to meet with the Secretary-General, who is a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, but also to acquaint herself with the operations of ARUA as well as discuss how the University can position itself for deeper collaborations with ARUA.
Welcoming Prof. Amfo to ARUA Office, Prof. Aryeetey said he was delighted with the visit, particularly because the University of Ghana will be hosting the next meeting of Deputy Vice-Chancellors/Pro-Vice-Chancellors of member universities of ARUA in September 2022. He said the meeting, among others, will focus on arrangements for implementing the ARUA Strategic Plan at member universities, a discussion of ARUA universities’ performance report and the report from the consultants (HSRC) doing a review of PhD programmes at member universities. Prof. Aryeetey mentioned that these three major items will require significant input from all universities and called on the Vice-Chancellor to support the implementation.
On her part, Prof. Amfo said as a founding member of ARUA, the University of Ghana hopes to capitalize on its affiliation with ARUA to intensify the existing partnership, in particular, to enhance UG’s research capacities. She added that enhancing research is in line with her key strategic objective as Vice-Chancellor.
Prof. Aryeetey highlighted the four key focus areas of ARUA as enhanced research, graduate support and training, research management and research advocacy. He said that currently ARUA has 13 Centres of Excellence in ARUA Member Universities. Prof. Aryeetey indicated that he was ready to support UG’s development in institutional research, and was hopeful that ARUA would work with management of University of Ghana to establish an ARUA Centre of Excellence.
The Vice-Chancellor later interacted with other staff of ARUA – Mrs. Stella A. Amoa, ARUA Network Manager and former Director of Public Affairs, University of Ghana, Mrs. Ewuraba Addo, ARUA Project Coordinator-UKRI and Ms. Abigail Alloye, Personal Assistant to the Secretary-General/Office Manager.
