ARUA Hosts a Briefing Session for Cohort 2 Early Career Researchers

11th June 2026

The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) convened a virtual briefing session on 10 June 2026 for the first batch of Cohort 2 fellows under the ARUA Early Career Researchers (ECR) Fellowship Programme. The session brought together 32 researchers from across Africa who have recently begun their six-month placements at ARUA Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoREs).

Held under the theme “Maximizing the ARUA Early Career Researchers Fellowship Experience,” the briefing provided an opportunity for fellows to interact with the ARUA Secretariat, led by Secretary-General Prof. John Gyapong, and gain a deeper understanding of the fellowship programme and the opportunities available to them.

The ECR Fellowship Programme, supported by the Mastercard Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, is one of ARUA’s flagship capacity-strengthening initiatives. It is designed to nurture the next generation of African researchers through mentorship, training, networking, and collaborative research.

During the session, fellows were introduced to ARUA’s vision of enhancing the global competitiveness of African researchers and institutions while contributing to Africa’s socio-economic transformation in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063. They also learned about ARUA’s 13 Centres of Excellence and 22 Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence, which serve as hubs for collaborative research and capacity building across a wide range of thematic areas.

A key focus of the briefing was the expectations and responsibilities of fellows as they embark on their fellowship journey. Participants were encouraged to actively engage with their mentors, host institutions, and fellow researchers, and to make full use of the opportunities available through the programme.

As part of the introductions, fellows were asked to share one key outcome that they hoped to achieve by the end of the fellowship. The responses were a true reflection of the programme’s objectives as depicted below:

Speaking during the session, ARUA Director of Research and Training, Prof. Jane Ambuko, reaffirmed the Secretariat’s commitment to supporting fellows throughout their fellowship journey. She encouraged them to take advantage of the many opportunities available through the programme, including:

Fellows were also encouraged to strategically build their professional profiles and engage with the broader ARUA community to expand their academic networks and increase the reach of their research.

Looking beyond the six-month fellowship period, the fellows were urged to view the programme as a foundation for long-term research excellence, leadership, and career advancement.

After the presentation from ARUA, there was an interactive Q & A segment, that allowed the fellows to seek clarification on various aspects of the programme.

At the end, the fellows were grateful for the opportunity to interact with the ARUA Secretariat team and receive guidance and clarifications as they embark on their six-months fellowship.

As the new cohort embarks on this transformative journey, ARUA looks forward to supporting them in becoming globally competitive researchers who contribute to knowledge generation, innovation, and sustainable development across Africa.
