The ARUA Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Jane Ambuko as the Director of Research and Training at African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA). Professor Ambuko’s appointment is a result of a competitive recruitment process that followed a call for expressions of interest in the position. She is a Professor of Horticulture from the University of Nairobi with extensive experience in research, training and community engagement.
The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) convened its 5th Biennial International Conference at Makerere University from 29 to 31 October 2025, coinciding with the Alliance’s 10th anniversary. Held under the theme “Research, Innovation and Artificial Intelligence for Africa’s Transformation,” the three-day conference brought together over 300 delegates from more than 20 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America — including vice-chancellors, leading scholars, policymakers and industry pioneers — to deliberate on how artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies can drive sustainable development, strengthen institutional research capacity and advance continental self-reliance.

The University of Mauritius has been admitted as the 21st full member of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA). The decision follows a review of the university’s progress on key performance benchmarks set by the ARUA Board, which expressed satisfaction with the strides made in strengthening research, innovation, and institutional capacity.
The Guild and ARUA are delighted to introduce the latest addition to the Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoRE): the CoRE in Integrative Conservation Biology Research and Training. The new CoRE answers a call from over 200 researchers on both continents to safeguard Eastern Africa’s biodiversity amid climate change, while addressing local community needs.

The event brought together academics, policymakers, students, and members of the public in-person and online to reflect on the theme: “Exploring the Intersections of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Research Management: Options, Challenges, and Prospects for Universities in Africa”
Topic: “Exploring the Intersections of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Research Management: Options, Challenges, and Prospects for Universities in Africa.”
The discourse will examine the increasing and pervasive role of intellectual property rights (IPR) in shaping societal development, with a specific focus on education and research. Informed by recent global and continental regulatory dynamics propelled by, among others, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the AU Agenda 2063, and the adoption of the AfCFTA Intellectual Property Protocol in 2023, all of which point to the increased importance of research and innovation in addressing societal challenges.
Deputy Vice-Chancellors (DVCs) of ARUA met today at the University of Dar es Salaam to review and discuss the Alliance’s ongoing projects and programs. The meeting provided an opportunity for the DVCs to assess ARUA’s progress and share insights on strengthening its initiatives.
The Africa Charter for Transformative Research Collaborations is an Africa-centred framework that champions a new model of global scientific research partnerships built on equity and mutual respect. The Charter upholds the continent’s place in the global production of scientific knowledge.
