The ARUA Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Jane Ambuko as the Director of Research and Training at African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA). Professor Ambuko’s appointment is a result of a competitive recruitment process that followed a call for expressions of interest in the position. She is a Professor of Horticulture from the University of Nairobi with extensive experience in research, training and community engagement.
The University of Mauritius has been admitted as the 21st full member of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA). The decision follows a review of the university’s progress on key performance benchmarks set by the ARUA Board, which expressed satisfaction with the strides made in strengthening research, innovation, and institutional capacity.
The Guild and ARUA are delighted to introduce the latest addition to the Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoRE): the CoRE in Integrative Conservation Biology Research and Training. The new CoRE answers a call from over 200 researchers on both continents to safeguard Eastern Africa’s biodiversity amid climate change, while addressing local community needs.
The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) held its 3rd Annual Distinguished Public Lecture on Friday, 29 August 2025, at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania. The event brought together academics, policymakers, students, and members of the public in-person and online to reflect on the theme: “Exploring the Intersections of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Research Management: Options, Challenges, and Prospects for Universities in Africa”
Deputy Vice-Chancellors (DVCs) of ARUA met today at the University of Dar es Salaam to review and discuss the Alliance’s ongoing projects and programs. The meeting provided an opportunity for the DVCs to assess ARUA’s progress and share insights on strengthening its initiatives.

This comprehensive report presents a detailed analysis of institutional trends across the ARUA network, with a strong focus on postgraduate training, academic staffing, research performance, and innovation output.

This online repository contains interactive reports on students (undergraduate to PhD), post-doctoral fellows, staff (academic and non-academic), research funding, patents and research output of all 23 member universities of ARUA from, 2015 – 2023.
The repository has been made possible through the generous support of the Carnegie Corporation of New York under the Data-Gathering & Benchmarking project. The project, which started in 2018, is currently in its fourth phase, during which the database will be updated to include data for the years 2024 and 2025.

The year 2024 has been one of great engagement and consolidation of our activities. Working together, we have chalked many milestones that are worth mentioning. I would briefly reflect on some of the high points and touch on our aspirations for 2025 and beyond.
The inaugural Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoRE) conference, hosted by Stellenbosch University, took place from September 29 to October 2, 2024. Bringing together more than 250 academics from 49 institutions across 27 countries in Africa, Europe, and beyond, the conference served as a pivotal platform for fostering international collaboration and advancing cutting-edge research initiatives.
