The ARUA Board convened a two-day meeting on May 23 – 24, 2024, at the Future Africa campus of the University of Pretoria, focusing on the ambitious ARUA-Mastercard Collaborative PhD program initiative. This groundbreaking initiative aims to train 1,000 PhDs annually over the next decade, marking a significant stride toward enhancing research capacity and innovation across the African continent.
Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, Secretary-General of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), has underscored the urgent need for a transformative business model in African research collaboration. He made this known while delivering a keynote address titled, “Developing a New Research and Innovation Ecosystem for Africa through Effective Partnership” at the 2024 Presidents Forum of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN).
The University of Glasgow has announced honorary degrees to be conferred on distinguished individuals in recognition of their achievement in the fields of politics, arts, science and humanities. The African Research Universities Alliance, or ARUA, indicated in its strategic plan (2022-27) its intention to assist member universities to produce 1,000 PhD graduates annually by the end of the plan period, up from the average of 200 that the universities have been doing.
The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) is proud to announce the admission of Université Mohammed VI Polytechnique (UM6P) of Morocco as its newest full member. UM6P’s inclusion marks a significant milestone, as it becomes the 20th full member of the Alliance and the first from Northern Africa, bringing the total number of member universities to 23.

ARUA and University of London have issued a statement signaling their intention to work together in developing cutting-edge research and graduate training. The signing ceremony took place at the University of Lagos on 14th November, 2023.
A colourful opening ceremony of the Fourth ARUA 2023 Biennial International Conference took place this morning at the Tayo Aderinokun Theatre at the University of Lagos.
The Conference brings together about 300 participants who are experts from universities, research institutions, government, industry, civil society organisations and stakeholders of ARUA. The theme for the Conference is: Reimagining the Future of Higher Education in Africa. University of Lagos is hosting the International Conference.

The ARUA Board on the second day of its meeting elected Professor Sizwe Mabizela as in-coming Chairman of the ARUA Board. Prof. Mabizela, Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University is currently the Vice Chair of the ARUA Board.
